Houndstooth pattern generator
Houndstooth is not a drawn shape. It is what an even check does when it is one step bigger than the twill's float: eight threads of each colour on a 2/2 twill, and the corners break into four points. Draw the shape by hand and it is a decal; weave it and every tooth is where the cloth put it.

What makes it houndstooth
Eight and eight, 2/2 twill, warp and weft alike. The studio draws the interlacement thread by thread, so the teeth come out of the structure — which is also why the pattern holds together when you change the colours or the scale.
Coating, jackets, skirts, accessories. Black and cream is the classic; the same cloth in two close tones reads as a texture instead of a statement.
How to make one
- Open the Sett engine and pick houndstooth from the ready-made checks in the panel. The studio writes its thread count into the cloth for you.
- Put your colours on it. Choose a palette or paste your own hex codes; the ground, the field and the lines take their colours in that order.
- Set the scale in threads. The bands are threads, not pixels, so the check keeps its proportions when you change the yarn count or the repeat width.
- Export what the job needs. A seamless PNG for print-on-demand, an SVG for vector work, an A4 sheet with a ruler for a mill, or a WIF draft for a loom.
Questions
What thread count makes houndstooth?
Eight ends of each colour on a 2/2 twill. Four and four gives shepherd's check; sixteen and sixteen gives a bold dogtooth that still comes from the weave.
Can houndstooth be made in plain weave?
No. Plain weave gives a flat even check at the same thread count. The points need the twill diagonal.
