Weave Mode Guide: Real Plaid and Check Patterns
Mode guide · Updated 23 August 2026
In short: Weave is a real warp/weft loom simulation — you set a colour sett and a weave structure (plain, twill, satin, herringbone, basket, or a custom draft up to 16 shafts), and it renders the actual thread interlacement, not a flat colour grid.
What Weave mode is for
Weave is the engine for anything built from a repeating colour sequence crossed in two directions: tartan-style plaid, buffalo check, gingham, and any custom sett you design. Unlike a simple grid tool, Weave actually simulates which thread — warp or weft — sits on top at each crossing, so the colour blending you see on screen matches what a loom would physically produce.
Key controls
- Sett (colour sequence) — define the stripe colours and widths for warp and weft independently, or keep them symmetric for a classic "even sett" plaid.
- Weave structure — pick a named structure (plain, twill, satin, herringbone, basket) or open the Custom Draft editor to author threading, tie-up and treadling by hand on up to 16 shafts.
- Yarn count — controls the real physical thread density, which determines the true printed/woven size of each stripe.
- Colorways — generate multiple colour variations of the same sett automatically via the Color Manager, without redrawing the structure.
Who uses Weave mode
Etsy and POD sellers use it for classic plaid/check listings that need to look genuinely woven, not printed-to-look-woven. Mills and small labels use it to prototype a sett and export a true-scale colourway (A4 sheet with a centimetre ruler) before committing yarn to a loom.
Try it live: Weave is available on every plan, including Free — clean exports, no watermark, all named weave structures.

Do I need to understand weaving to use Weave mode?
No — named structures (plain, twill, satin, etc.) are ready to use with no draft knowledge required. The Custom Draft editor is there if you want full manual control.
Can I export Weave patterns for a mill?
Yes — export a colourway on an A4 sheet with a centimetre ruler, so a mill can measure stripe widths directly from the printout.
Is Weave available on the Free plan?
Yes, Weave is the Free plan's focus — clean, watermark-free exports up to 1024px.
