DPI Guide for Print-on-Demand: What Resolution Do You Actually Need?

In short: DPI (dots per inch) describes how much image detail is packed into each printed inch. Most fabric and apparel POD printing looks sharp at 150 DPI; fine paper goods and close-up products want 300 DPI. What actually matters is the pixel dimensions at your print size — DPI is just pixels ÷ inches.
DPI in one sentence
If an image is 3000 pixels wide and you print it at 10 inches wide, that's 300 DPI (3000 ÷ 10). The same 3000-pixel image printed at 20 inches wide becomes 150 DPI — same file, lower resolution, because the pixels are spread over more physical space.

The rule: the closer the product is typically viewed, the higher the DPI it needs, because the eye can resolve finer detail up close. A wallpaper viewed from across a room can get away with far less resolution per inch than a greeting card held six inches from your face.
How to check before you export
- Find your platform's exact spec — most POD platforms publish minimum pixel dimensions per product size, not just a DPI number. Check theirs before exporting; the numbers above are general guidance, not a substitute for the platform's own requirement.
- Export at the pixel dimensions the platform specifies, not just "as large as possible" — oversized files waste storage and upload time with no visible benefit above the printer's actual resolution.
- For a seamless repeat pattern specifically, resolution also affects how large one printed repeat looks — a low-resolution tile stretched to cover a large area will look blurry even if the DPI number looks acceptable on paper.

Is higher DPI always better?
No — beyond what the product and printer can actually resolve, extra pixels just mean a larger file with no visible quality gain. Match resolution to the platform's actual spec.
Can I upscale a low-resolution pattern instead of re-exporting?
Upscaling software can improve how a low-resolution image looks, but it can't recover detail that was never captured — re-exporting from the original pattern generator at the correct size always gives a sharper result than upscaling afterward.
Does DPI matter for digital-only listings (no physical print)?
Less so — a file only ever viewed on screen is governed by pixel dimensions relative to screen resolution, not DPI. DPI matters specifically once ink hits a physical surface.
