PlaidMaker makes plaid in the browser and does it quickly. The Plaid Studio starts from a thread count and a weave, which is a different job — here is the difference, in their words and ours.

Where we are different
- The design is a thread count. You write the sett in threads and set the mirror axis; the engine draws every crossing. That is what a mill asks for and what keeps the proportions when the yarn changes.
- The weave is part of the pattern. Plain, twills, basket, herringbone and your own draft on a grid up to 16 × 16 — a houndstooth's points come out of the interlacement, not out of a drawn shape.
- Production files. A seamless PNG and SVG, an A4 CAD sheet with a centimetre ruler, a spec sheet, a WIF weaving draft and an ASE palette.
- Four other engines on the same cloth. The same sett painted in watercolour or drawn in pen, plus geometric and floral repeats, so a range keeps one colour story.
- No watermark on any plan, and the free tier is a working tool rather than a trial: the Sett engine, every weave structure and five clean exports a month.
Which should you use?
If you want a plaid image quickly and the resolution their page states is enough for your job, use PlaidMaker — it is built for that and it is fewer clicks. Come here when the cloth has to be real: when a printer has asked for a repeat of an exact size, when a buyer wants six colourways of one sett, or when the design is going to a loom.

Can I move a design from PlaidMaker to The Plaid Studio?
Not as a file. What carries across is the recipe: the colour order and the widths. Write the same sequence as a thread count in the Sett engine — or open a photograph of the cloth and let the studio read the sett, the colours and the weave off it.
Why would I want thread counts at all?
Because they are what a mill, a weaver and a tartan register all speak in, and because a count in threads keeps its proportions when you change the yarn, the density or the repeat size. A design drawn in pixels has to be redrawn for each.
