How to choose

  1. If you need a picture of a plaid today — a web background, a mock-up, a quick listing image — take the fastest free tool in the table. You do not need a weave engine for that.
  2. If the repeat has to be an exact size in centimetres, or at 300 dpi and up, check the resolution row: that is where free tools usually stop.
  3. If the cloth will be woven, or a buyer wants a colourway range off one sett, you need thread counts, a real weave structure and production files — a WIF draft, a spec sheet, an A4 sheet with a ruler.
  4. If you are selling on a marketplace, check the watermark and the licence terms of whatever you use. Ours puts no watermark on any plan, and what you make is yours on every plan, including Free.

Which plaid pattern generator is best?

It depends on what the file is for. If you need a picture of a plaid for a background or a listing, the quickest free tool will do. If the cloth has to be woven, or a printer has asked for a specific repeat size at a specific resolution, you want a tool that works in thread counts and weave structure and exports production files.

What is the difference between a plaid maker and a weave engine?

A plaid maker draws coloured bands and crosses them. A weave engine interlaces warp and weft thread by thread, so the crossings blend the way cloth does and the weave itself is part of the pattern — which is what makes a houndstooth's points appear without anyone drawing them.

Are any of these tools free?

Several are, with limits. Ginifab's designer says it is free for everyone; Printable Creative's Tartan Maker is free at 1200 × 1200 with larger sizes for members; Pattern Weaver gives five free credits; The Plaid Studio's free tier gives five clean exports a month at up to 1024px with no watermark. The others do not state their pricing on the pages we read.

Do I need a loom file?

Only if a weaver is going to make the cloth. A WIF draft carries the threading, tie-up, treadling and thread colours, which is what a hand weaver or a mill needs; for print-on-demand a seamless PNG at the right pixel size is enough.
