How to Sell Textile Patterns on Etsy

In short: most sellers list patterns either as digital downloads (the buyer prints it themselves) or built into print-on-demand products (fabric by the yard, tea towels, tote bags). Both start from the same seamless, print-ready pattern file — the difference is only in how you list it.
Two ways to sell a pattern on Etsy
1. Digital download
You sell the pattern file itself — typically a high-resolution PNG or a PDF with the pattern tiled at a fixed physical size (e.g. one repeat per A4 sheet, with a ruler for scale) — and the buyer prints it themselves or sends it to their own printer. This has the lowest overhead: no inventory, no fulfilment, and margins are close to 100% after Etsy's fees.
2. Print-on-demand products
You connect Etsy to a POD provider (fabric-by-the-yard printers, or general POD platforms that put your pattern on totes, pillows, or apparel), and the provider prints and ships per order. This has a lower margin per sale but no upfront printing cost and no design skill required from the buyer.
What buyers and platforms actually check
- Seamless tiling. Any pattern sold "by the yard" or as a repeat must tile without a visible seam — see our guide on what makes a pattern seamless.
- Resolution. Each POD provider sets its own minimum, some in DPI and some in pixels; export below it and the file is rejected or, worse, prints blurry. The DPI guide lists what Spoonflower and Printful ask for.
- Listing photos. Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high. Show the pattern on a product, not only the flat tile.
- Colour accuracy. Screen colours and printed colours differ. If you're printing physical fabric, an export with a true-scale reference (so you know the exact printed size of one repeat) avoids surprises on delivery.
Etsy's rules for pattern sellers
Checked in October 2026 against Etsy's own policy and help pages. Etsy changes these, so check them again before you list.
- Fees. $0.20 to list an item for four months, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and a payment processing fee that depends on your country: 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK.
- Digital file limits. An instant-download listing can include up to five files, each up to 20 MB. A collection of large tiles may need splitting across files or listings.
- “Designed by a seller”. Digital downloads and print-on-demand items both belong in this category: your original design, printed by someone else or delivered as a file.
- Production partners. When a print-on-demand company makes the product, name it as a production partner on the listing and show where the item ships from.
- AI disclosure. Etsy asks you to say in the listing description when an item was created with AI tools, such as an image generator working from your prompts. If you used a chat assistant to suggest a thread count or a palette, whether that counts is your call; when in doubt, disclose.
Pricing digital pattern downloads
Single pattern files are usually priced low, and a coordinated collection of 5–10 patterns sells for more than any one file; complexity and exclusivity move the price too. Do I need a license to sell patterns I designed myself?
If you designed the pattern yourself (rather than tracing or copying someone else's copyrighted work), you own it and can sell it commercially. Patterns you design in The Plaid Studio are yours, including for commercial use and on the Free plan; we claim no ownership of what you create or export (see our terms). What image format should I upload to Etsy?
