How to Sell Textile Patterns on Etsy

In short: most sellers list patterns either as digital downloads (the buyer prints it themselves) or built into print-on-demand products (fabric by the yard, tea towels, tote bags). Both start from the same seamless, print-ready pattern file — the difference is only in how you list it.
Two ways to sell a pattern on Etsy
1. Digital download
You sell the pattern file itself — typically a high-resolution PNG or a PDF with the pattern tiled at a fixed physical size (e.g. one repeat per A4 sheet, with a ruler for scale) — and the buyer prints it themselves or sends it to their own printer. This has the lowest overhead: no inventory, no fulfilment, and margins are close to 100% after Etsy's fees.
2. Print-on-demand products
You connect Etsy to a POD provider (fabric-by-the-yard printers, or general POD platforms that put your pattern on totes, pillows, or apparel), and the provider prints and ships per order. This has a lower margin per sale but no upfront printing cost and no design skill required from the buyer.
What buyers and platforms actually check
- Seamless tiling. Any pattern sold "by the yard" or as a repeat must tile without a visible seam — see our guide on what makes a pattern seamless.
- Resolution. Each POD provider specifies a minimum DPI per product; export below that and the platform will reject the file, or worse, print it blurry.
- Colour accuracy. Screen colours and printed colours differ. If you're printing physical fabric, an export with a true-scale reference (so you know the exact printed size of one repeat) avoids surprises on delivery.
Pricing digital pattern downloads
Digital pattern files on Etsy commonly range from $3–$15 depending on complexity and exclusivity (a "collection" of 5–10 coordinating patterns typically sells for more than a single file). Do I need a license to sell patterns I designed myself?
If you designed the pattern yourself (rather than tracing or using someone else's copyrighted work), you own it and can sell it commercially. Always check the license terms of whatever tool you used to generate it.
