What each number is

Two of the studio's own cloth presets land on this arithmetic exactly: kilt worsted at Ne 5.3 gives 32 ends per inch, and 64 threads of it measure 5.1 cm; shirting poplin at Ne 40 gives 89, and the same 64 threads measure 1.8 cm. Those are the figures the app prints.

Two directions are useful. Given a yarn, the sett follows — that is the default. Given a sett you already weave at, the balanced count follows: Ne = (epi / 14)². Type into the sett box and the count above changes to the one that closes that cloth.

Why the sett matters for a design, not just a loom

A thread count is in threads, so on its own it says nothing about size. The yarn is what turns it into centimetres: sixty-four threads at Ne 5.3 is a different cloth from sixty-four threads at Ne 40, and only one of them is a shirt. This is also why a pattern exported without a physical size is guesswork for whoever receives it.

Questions

How do I convert Ne to tex?

Divide 590.5 by the count: tex = 590.5 / Ne. So Ne 20 is about 30 tex, and Ne 3 is about 197 tex. Ne gets finer as it rises, tex gets coarser.

What sett should I use for a given yarn?

For a closed cloth, about 14 times the square root of the count in ends per inch — Ne 5.3 gives 32, Ne 30 gives 77. Set it more openly for a lighter cloth by multiplying by anything from 0.5 to 1.

What are wraps per inch for?

It is the measurement you can take with a ruler and the yarn itself: wind it round, count the turns in an inch. It equals about 28 times the square root of the count, and half of it is the closed sett.

How wide will my thread count be?

Divide the number of threads by the ends per inch and multiply by 2.54 for centimetres. The calculator above does it: 64 threads at 32 epi is 5.1 cm.

Is this the same arithmetic the studio uses?

Yes — the same constants and the same formulas as the engine, so a sett you work out here is the sett the design will be drawn at. It was checked against the app's own readout for the same count.
